What is a Smudge Pot?
A smudge pot is an oil-burning device that was used to prevent frost on fruit trees back in the 1900s. The smudge pot was placed between trees in an orchard, allowing the heat from the burning oil to prevent the accumulation of frost on the fruit of the grove. Smudge pots were developed after a disastrous freeze in Southern California in 1913 wiped out a whole crop. While this preservation method has fallen out of style for some, it is still an efficient way to protect orchards from the cold.
Today people prefer to use our smudge pots to help keep their backyard or campground warm. Due to how these devices release heat through a chimney, they can heat whole areas with very little fuel such as diesel, kerosene, motor oil, vegetable oil, and because they run on many different fuel sources, you can use a fuel such as citronella oil that can help control mosquitoes and other pests.
